For the first few months, the metrics held. Accuracy steady. Latency acceptable. Users cautiously optimistic.
Then, somewhere around month nine, something subtle shifted.
Escalations ticked upward. Outputs required more correction. Costs rose faster than expected. The original champions moved to new priorities. No one declared failure. The system still ran.
But the real test had only just begun.
AI Readiness Is Not a Pre-Launch State

Governance erodes. Policies documented at launch are not revisited. Ownership blurs. Executive sponsors move on. Boards often lack deep AI literacy, only 39% of Fortune 100 companies disclosed any board-level oversight of AI in 2024, and 66% of directors reported limited or no AI knowledge.
Readiness was treated as a milestone. It is an operating discipline.

Regulatory signals reinforce this lifecycle view. The EU AI Act mandates post-market monitoring for high-risk systems. Governance is assumed to persist beyond deployment.
Readiness, in this framing, is not documentation. It is sustained operational resilience.

Champions burn out. Funding cycles tighten. Support tickets increase. Informal fixes proliferate. Shadow AI usage appears when official systems lag.
